Many newcomers to Pilates assume that Pilates classes, like yoga classes, take place on mats. In fact, the system of Pilates was created around a series of equipment pieces. Equipment includes items like the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Chair, and the Ladder Barrel. While we do offer more than 24 classes a week at Pilates on Fifth (including Pilates mat classes), we highly recommend using the wealth of fantastic Pilates equipment we have in our studio.
To learn how to use our Pilates equipment, you'll want to sign up for Pilates privates. Eventually, if you prefer, you can sign up for Pilates duets or trios. Privates are an incredible way to do Pilates, because the workout centers entirely around you and your needs. A 30-year-old woman who wants to work on her six pack will end up with a different private session from a 40-year-old woman who wants to work on her golf game or a 70-year-old man who wants to work on his posture and balance.
The great thing about Pilates is that it can dramatically benefit these diverse clients. The instructors who work at Pilates on Fifth are not mere Pilates enthusiasts (like you'll find at so many other gyms and clubs), they are Pilates experts. They can confidently and knowledgeably teach you exercises designed specifically with your goals, health, and injuries in mind.
The Reformer will help you build both strength and flexibility. The Cadillac will help you focus on very specific body parts. It's a great piece of equipment for people with injuries, because you can be very, very specific about working targeted body parts. The Chair is a wonderful teaching tool for newcomers, and for advanced students, it's all about strength. Our male clients love the Chair because it's great for strength and muscle building.
