The Pilates exercise system was created in the 1920s by a German man named Joseph Pilates. The system was originally enjoyed by dancers; luminaries like Martha Graham and George Balanchine strengthened and protected their bodies with Pilates workouts. Pilates is non-impact, so it doesn't tax the body's joints. It strengthens the core muscles of the body, like the deep muscles of the abdomen and the muscles surrounding the spine.
