Very different personality types are attracted to Pilates and Pilates instruction. Some people who pursue Pilates education in order to become certified instructors are highly competitive. Many of these future teachers are super-athletes or dancers who view Pilates as an extreme form of fitness. These future instructors are looking for a New York City Pilates education that will emphasize aesthetics above all else.
At the Pilates Academy International and our headquarters, Pilates on Fifth, this isn't how we view Pilates at all. While we tend to be perfectionists about Pilates technique and form, we're also very compassionate. For us, the real value of Pilates lies in what it can do for everyday people with everyday injuries, limitations, and goals.
Your instructors at the Pilates Academy International will teach you to become a compassionate instructor who really listens to her clients. You'd be amazed by how many private Pilates instructors never ask their clients, "What are your personal goals, and how can Pilates help you achieve them?" We strongly believe that asking this simple question--and valuing the answer--are the keys to becoming a great Pilates instructor.
Once you know your client's specific goals, you can design workouts that will help him or her to achieve them. One client may want to lose a lot of weight and tone up before a big reunion or special event. Another client may want to reduce the neck and shoulder tension that are making it hard to sit at a computer all day. A third may want to improve his golf swing. Once you know what each client hopes for, you begin to see that client as an individual--and to individualize your workouts for that person's needs.
