Pro-Health Pilates

Are you a cancer survivor? At serious risk for heart disease? Recovering from surgery? Rehabilitating from an injury? Need to get back into exercise safely after a long hiatus? We offer “Pink Ribbon Pilates” for breast cancer survivors, “Heart Smart Pilates” for those at risk or recovering from cardiovascular disease and “Revitalizing Pilates” for those looking to re-embrace life and recover from injury or surgery. Our dedicated team of instructors will take into consideration all of your needs and issues to create an integrative fitness regime for you utilizing all of our services. We even correspond with your physician (should that be your desire) in order to create a program that is perfect for you. Please note that ALL of the programs listed below are intended for individuals who have been cleared by their physician or physical therapist to begin a safe and cautious fitness regime.

Pink Ribbon Pilates

Re-embrace life! To all you courageous women who have survived breast cancer, our Pink Ribbon Pilates program is designed just for you. Katherine and Kimberly spent many hours volunteering at Mount Sinai’s Breast Health Resource Center and thus understand women in all stages of recovery. Pilates on Fifth provides a friendly, inviting oasis from the roar of life, where you can join with other survivors in re-embracing all that life has to offer. Pink Ribbon Pilates will help you do the following:
  • Regain strength and mobility in the affected arm: Whether your goal is to play tennis again or simply wash your hair without tightness or pain, our fantastic instructors will provide you with a systematic progression of exercises to enable you to increase the strength and flexibility of the affected arm. Improve core strength after reconstruction involving abdominal surgeries: If you’ve had a Tram Flap, then you’ve found the right place! Our instructors are well-informed of the procedure and can work with you and your current strengths and weaknesses to develop a safe and effective core strength building program. Whether just cleared for safe exercise by your doctor or many years post-op and still not feeling confident in your strength, Pilates on Fifth can help.
  • Circulate lymph and remove toxins! Help prevent the onset of lymphedema! Our CARDIOLATES® program integrates the alignment principles of Pilates with the physiological and cardiovascular benefits of rebounding. Rebound exercise – which uses a rebounder, much like a mini-trampoline, but more durable – is well known for its ability to increase lymphatic circulation. Many of our breast cancer survivors have found us because their doctors have recommended rebounding in order to prevent the onset of lymphedema. As the lymphatic system is the great detoxifier of the body, rebounding is a safe and effective way to increase circulation of both the blood and the lymph and detoxify, even if you are not at risk for lymphedema. Because the mat of the rebounder absorbs 87% of the shock to the body, your joints will thank you for engaging in CARDIOLATES®. You can incorporate CARDIOLATES® into your hour workout or feel free to come early or stay late and bounce on your own!
Heart Smart Pilates
  • Improve Heart Strength and Health: Whether you are fit as a fiddle or an inspired couch potato, our team will design an integrated workout program for you that allows you to build strength gradually without stress to the heart or joints. By integrating use of CARDIOLATES® and/or cardio equipment into your Pilates or GYROTONIC® regime, we can customize an exercise system for you that is fun, effective and easy to stick with!
  • Lower your Cholesterol: For decades now, studies have shown that exercise helps lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. We’ll keep it fun as we combine our fitness services for you to increase muscle tone, improve circulation, increase cardiovascular endurance and ultimately lower your cholesterol! Our circuit training plan increases the effectiveness of your workout without over taxing the body.
  • Obesity: Our warm, inviting, sunlit studio accepts all shapes and sizes. No intimidating attitudes here! Pilates on Fifth is the perfect place for you to start on the road to better health. Our fully equipped Pilates studio offers a multitude of exercises with the support you need to strengthen your core, tone your abdominal muscles and condition your joints without the fear of injury.
  • Heart Attack/Heart Surgery Recovery: Our team will meet you where you are and design a workout specific to your goals and needs. Pilates can be a very gentle form of exercise that will mobilize your joints without elevating your blood pressure to unsafe levels. As you get stronger, your workout will progress to accommodate increased strength and stamina.
Pilates for Stronger Bones
  • Osteoporosis/Osteopenia: Because the equipment uses spring resistance and provides support, Pilates is an ideal choice for women seeking to strengthen their bones. Many exercises are performed with ant-gravity resistance so that you may correct any postural imbalances and work on improving alignment which can be causing pain in life. We progress our clients slowly and carefully and always according to the clients’ needs and doctor’s orders.
  • CARDIOLATES® for stronger bones: Did you know that you do not even have to leave the mat to benefit from rebound exercise? The increased gravitational force at the bottom of the bounce – even airless bounces – strengthens every cell of the body, including bone cells. But because the mat of the rebounder absorbs 87% of the shock to the body, you don’t have to worry about the stress to your joints that comes from walking or running on pavement or treadmills. And CARDIOLATES® is fun! We have stability bars for our rebounders so you can reinforce optimal alignment while exercising and never worry about losing your balance. You can progress at your own pace.
Revitalizing Pilates
  • Cancer Survivors: Many instructors at Pilates on Fifth are Cancer Exercise Specialists and have been trained in the exercise design in protocol for survivors of various types of cancers. We know how to adjust exercise to accommodate lymph node removal, avoid irritating incision sites and regain overall strength and stamina.
  • Abdominal Surgeries: From C-sections to kidney transplants, we have successfully helped those clients with major abdominal surgeries regain the strength and mobility they need to move through life without pain or complication. Because the abdominal muscles are usually cut completely in such surgeries, we treat each client as the unique case he/she represents and work slowly to rebuild core strength. We believe in listening to the client’s needs above all else and designing a program in which both parties are comfortable with the pace and the progress.
  • Spinal Conditions/Injuries: Disc Injuries, Spinal issues, Harrington Rods: The spine is clearly the axis of your body and injuries here can affect the entire system. By focusing on core stabilization and precise, controlled movements, we aim to teach our clients healthy habits that they can take with them playing golf on the weekends, picking up grandkids, mowing the lawn, etc. For those clients with Harrington Rods, we have successfully created dynamic, diverse and fun workouts that respect the spine’s limitations but still strengthen the abdominals (in neutral!) and provide a safe and enjoyable way to enjoy fitness.
  • Hip/Knee Replacements or other injuries: Our talented team of instructors has worked with both hip and knee replacements and can develop a program specifically to meet your needs and limitations so that you can safely reach your fitness and movement goals. We are cautious, yet encouraging and will be your ally on the road to full recovery! We also have much experience with torn ACLs, PCLs and injured lateral rotators of the hip.
  • Torn Rotator Cuffs/Shoulder injuries: If you have experienced a torn rotator cuff, a dislocated shoulder, nerve impingement, etc., then you know how much a painful shoulder joint can affect the quality of your life! We proceed cautiously and pay attention to the alignment of the head and neck in relation to the shoulder and select exercise to bring awareness to maintaining the proper alignment between the three.
  • Neck Injuries/Whiplash: Whether from a car accident, a fall or too much computer use with a phone between your ear and shoulder, we can help you relearn proper head and neck alignment and teach you exercises to strengthen the muscles that have been neglected and release those that may have been overworked. Neurological Issues (MS, Parkinson’s): We treat every client as a unique individual, and those with a diagnosable disease are no different. We work within each client’s comfort range to mobilize joints, increase core stabilization, improve balance and provide an overall greater sense of well-being
