Course Descriptions

Pilates training  to become a skilled Pilates instructor that delivers all Pilates benefits

Each and every Pilates instructor at our studio knows that to get the most Pilates benefits out of your Pilates practice, it is important to incorporate the knowledge of the abdominal muscles into the Pilates training. Knowing anatomy and biomechanics is an essential skill of a great Pilates instructor, and will enable you to create safe and effective Pilates workout programs for your clients. For example, the deepest layer of the abdominal muscles, the transversus abdominis, runs like a corset around the midsection. With this knowledge a Pilates instructor can develop a Pilates training regimen that not only protects the lower back from injury, but also creates firm, flat abs (one of the trademark Pilates benefits!). At our Pilates training program, The Pilates Academy International, we ensure that all of our soon to be Pilates instructors are well versed in both anatomy and biomechanics so they truly understand the Pilates benefits. In fact, every one of our students takes a special course: Anatomy, Biomechanics and Posture Analysis, so that once they become a Pilates instructor they can design effective Pilates training programs so that every client, regardless of age, size or exercise history, can derive all the Pilates benefits from their Pilates workouts.

Anatomy, Biomechanics and Posture Review (ABP) - 12 hours

This course reviews the structures (bones, muscles, joints, etc.) that form the support of the human body. An emphasis will be placed on "ideal" posture and "ideal" biomechanics of each joint while helping students learn how to detect abnormalities both statically and dynamically. Open to all personal trainers, this course is invaluable in helping you provide lasting results for your clients and increase your marketability.

All Populations Mat (APM) - 35 hours

This course teaches the first three tiers (Fundamental, Fundamental 2 and Intermediate) of the Mat repertoire. Students will learn how to modify all exercises for all age groups and fitness levels to create safe and effective workouts. Emphasis is placed on maintaining variety and providing small challenges while safely progressing a client in order to avoid monotony.

Prerequisite: ABP

Mat Progressions/ Challenge - 6 hours

This course teaches the last two tiers (Advanced Intermediate and Advanced) of the Mat repertoire. Students learn how to assess when a client is ready to be challenged and then how to progress the client safely and effectively.

All Populations Reformer (APR) - 50 hours

This course teaches students the Reformer exercises needed to be ready to customize workouts for all ages and fitness levels. Covering the first three tiers, Fundamental through Intermediate, All Populations Reformer also teaches the "physics" of the reformer so that students understand both the way the reformer operates and the safety concerns. Emphasis is placed on the differences between Pilates machine work versus regular gym equipment so that instructors are prepared to meet the needs of clients from all backgrounds.

Prerequisite: ABP

Reformer Progressions/ Challenge (RPC) - 20 hours

This course teaches students how to teach clients very challenging exercises on the Reformer. Care is taken to ensure each student understands the "benchmarks" a client should accomplish before an advanced exercise is attempted, which may include exercises on other equipment.

All Populations Cadillac/Tower (APCadillac) - 35 hours

This course teaches students the fundamental first three tiers (through Intermediate) of exercises conducted on the Cadillac/tower. The Cadillac is an excellent piece of equipment on which to focus on isolated joint movements to strengthen the joint properly and correct faulty movement habits. Emphasis will be placed on the benefits of Cadillac exercises as stepping stones to more challenging exercises.

Prerequisite: ABP

For video footage of PAI All Populations Cadillac/Tower exercises, click here or visit www.ultimatepilatesworkouts.com.

Cadillac/Tower Progressions/ Challenge - 12 hours

Building on the previous course, the Cadillac/tower progressions course teaches the final two tiers in the Cadillac repertoire so you may challenge your clients safely and effectively. Some of these exercises challenge core strength significantly. Thus students will be taught the "benchmarks" for assessing when to progress a client.

Barrels Progressions/ Challenge (BarrelsPC) - 6 hours

This course builds on the material learned in the All Populations Barrels course, adding the final two tiers of the repertoire. Students will learn how to use these exercises to challenge both their core strength and their own body awareness and control.

Prerequisite: APBarrels

For video footage of PAI Barrels Progression/Challenge exercises, click here or visit www.ultimatepilatesworkouts.com.

Chair Progressions/Challenge (ChairPC) - 6 hours

This course adds Tiers 4 & 5 to the chair repertoire learned in the All Populations Chair course. Students will not only learn the new exercises, but also how to progress their clients carefully, delivering optimal results in strength and control.

Prerequisite: APChair

For video footage of PAI Chair Progressions/Challenge exercises, click here or visit www.ultimatepilatesworkouts.com.

Special Conditions: Foundations & Mat (SCFM)- 18 hours

This course provides students with an overview of the information needed to customize exercise routines for clients with special needs. This overview of the conditions and injuries most often seen among clients will better equip instructors to talk with a client's medical professional and thus design a safe and effective workout. Finally, how to adapt mat exercises to clients with special needs will be addressed.

Special Conditions: Reformer - 4 hours

This course teaches students how to use the Reformer as a post-physical therapy exercise regime for clients recovering from an injury. Care will be taken to teach HOW to progress a client based on the information and release form provided by the doctor or medical professional.

Prerequisite: APR, SCFM

Special Conditions: Cadillac - 4 hours

This course teaches students how to incorporate Cadillac exercises into a client's post-physical therapy routine. The Cadillac is a wonderful place not only to help clients with neck and shoulder issues, but also to reintroduce supported abdominal work when advised.

Prerequisite: APCadillac, SCFM

Special Conditions: Chair & Barrels - 4 hours

This course teaches students how to utilize the chair and barrels to assist clients with special needs during their post-rehabilitative phases. The chair offers an upright alternative to the reformer for many exercises, and the barrels can assist clients who need additional lumbar support.

Prerequisite: SCFM, APChair, APBarrels

Programming for Results: All Equipment (PRAE) - 12 hours

This course should be called "How to Retain Clients!" Due to popular demand, we created a final programming course to help integrate the exercises on the various pieces of equipment. This helps students learn to customize workouts for their clients quickly and accurately. Because all equipment is utilized, students learn how to provide variety for their clients to keep each lesson interesting and invigorating. Thus, clients never get bored as they progress at the pace that is right for them. This course empowers students by enabling them to design a variety of "one hour sessions" for a number of case studies and get invaluable feedback. Students will return to their clients with a new sense of poise and confidence..and renewed energy.

Prerequisite: ABP and APM. While the course will be more beneficial to those students who have taken subsequent equipment courses, the programming tools taught can be used to retain clients in any setting.

Testimonials

After years of reaping the benefits of practicing Pilates, I was interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the principles behind the exercises, and wanted to be able to share that knowledge with my fellow dancers. The Anatomy/Biomechanics and All Populations Mat courses at PAI provided me with the insight I was looking for. I found PAI's curriculum challenging and informative, and the balanced, intelligent approach to the mat work made sense to me as a dancer. Now I have the skills necessary to provide my future clients with a program enabling them to develop an evenly-conditioned, strong, flexible body in a safe and healthy manner.
