Katherine and Kimberly Corp started Pilates on Fifth in August of 2000 with the dream of creating an elegant and unpretentious Pilates studio.
The former Radio City Rockettes had used Pilates during their rigorous performing schedules to stay healthy and injury-free and immediately saw the potential to help all population types develop healthy movement habits. Though competition in the fitness industry can be challenging in Manhattan, the twins relied on their passion for movement, their genuine desire to help others and their strong educational background to carry them through.
Today, their studio has grown to be Manhattan's largest Pilates studio, with over 5,500 square feet, and they employ over 40 full and part-time instructors, most of whom they trained themselves. Additionally, they have certified over 400 fitness professionals worldwide to teach Pilates safely and effectively.
As both girls are fluent in Japanese, they regularly conduct certification courses for Japanese students and are currently working on a project to increase awareness of Pilates in Japan and the Far East. This arm of their business is particularly rewarding as it allows them to use their Bachelor of Arts degrees in East Asian Studies from Duke University and their Master of International Affairs degrees from Columbia University.
Katherine and Kimberly first obtained their Pilates certification through STOTT PILATES® and were Instructor Trainers for the company from 2001-2005. In January 2006 they formed the Pilates Academy International, the educational arm of Pilates on Fifth, aimed at producing knowledgeable, inspirational, confident and competent Pilates instructors who can work with populations of all ages and fitness levels.
Katherine and Kimberly developed CARDIOLATES® in 2006, a dynamic new exercise program which integrates the alignment principles of Pilates with the physiological and cardiovascular benefits of rebounding. CARDIOLATES® is a fun way to get fit and detoxify without the stress to the joints of typical cardio activity.
They enhanced their Pilates certifications by becoming Cancer Exercise Specialists and subsequently co-founded Pro-Health Pilates, Inc. a non-profit corporation comprised of "Pink Ribbon Pilates" for breast cancer survivors and "Heart Smart Pilates" for clients at risk for cardiovascular disease. They are both certified GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® instructors as well as ACE and National Academy of Sports Medicine certified personal trainers.
Their wonderful staff keeps the studio running beautifully, thus allowing them to further their education and provide more for their clients. The studio's operations have also enabled them to keep one foot in the door of the performing world. They can be seen dancing and selling cookies in "The Stepford Wives" and also in the movie "Little Manhattan". Across the globe, the pair's television show "Get Beautiful with Pilates" airs on NHK in Japan.
